CLP – A new Regulation for Chemicals
CLP or CLP Regulation stands for Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures, amending and repealing directives 67/548/EEC and 1999/45/EC, and amending Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH). It came into force on 20 January 2009 and applies across the European Union.
Transition to CLP
The provisions of CLP will replace Council Directive 67/548/EEC (Dangerous Substances Directive, DSD) and Directive 1999/45/EC (Dangerous Preparations Directive, DPD) in a stepwise approach.
CLP compared to DSD and DPD
The CLP Regulation as well as the previous Dangerous Substances Directive (DSD) and the Dangerous Preparations Directive (DPD) all deal with classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures. Also, they cover in principle the same hazards. Yet there are some differences between CLP and DSD/DPD.
Industry’s roles and obligations under CLP
The obligations of a supplier of a substance or mixture depend upon his role under CLP.
Business preparing for CLP
The transition from the DSD/DPD directives to the CLP Regulation requires companies to plan certain steps.
